No chipped cards accepted

So I was at a new mall in NYC yesterday in the parking garage, the kind when you enter you press the button and get your ticket to pay when you leave , pretty common. Well when I was leaving I pulled up to the gate put my ticket in and swiped my Amex PRG and got a card not accepted. So a little annoyed I tried my CSP and got the same response, I decided to hit the help button and the guy who answered asked If I was using a chipped card, when I said I was (all my cards I was carrying were chipped) he said that they didn't accept chipped cards. The funny thing is they don't accept cash so my only other option he said was to give him my complete card number which I was not comfortable with. Luckily my GF was with me and she had a non chipped freedom card so I was ok. I'll have to remember to carry my Discover card from now on as a backup as that's my only non EMV card.
Sorry about the typos posting from my phone.

Re: No chipped cards accepted

Oh wow!! I wouldn't have given him my full number either!! I would have told him to send me a bill to my address!!! I'm surprised by that!

Re: No chipped cards accepted

Something is fishy, if there's no chip reader, swipe should work, unless it's only chip reader and it broke. But good thing your gf had other card.

Re: No chipped cards accepted

What was the style of reader? Was it an insert card all the way one? If it was you probably just pulled it out too soon.

Re: No chipped cards accepted

An EMV card with a magnetic strip should work on a regular swipe machine. I would not have given the guy my card number either. Everything about the transaction seems off.

Re: No chipped cards accepted

Skye legal tender makes it an offer of payment for a debt. So shops don't have to sell for cash. No debt yet exists. Parking is another story, but the law is complicated. If no cash was posted on entry then you agreed to that contract. If not, they have to take cash but can make it painful for you. Such as needing to deliver it to their agent by registered mail (just in way I could think of for them to make it painful).

There is no barcode on a normal credit card. The magnetic stripe has a code saying to not allow it when a chip reader is available. Frankly, if this is a dip reader my bet is still on him just removing the card too quickly.
