I'm joining PenFed now, so I can apply for it in the future.

Any card that charges an AF is subprime to me. I'm just saying.
Unfortunately it's an uninformed opinion. There are many uber prime cards like Amex Platinum, Amex Centurion and Ameriprise World MC that charge hefty AF's.

I consider those uber cards subprime too. One should not have to pay an AF to feel like they're a member of an elite group, or to receive exclusive benefits that they're essentailly paying for.
