Hi! I have a question. First, I was recently approved for the Chase Freedom and Discover It cards. For the It card, cardholders get 5% cash back for Online Purchases. While the Freedom offers 5% on Amazon and Select Department store purchases. In order to maximize my rewards would it be possible to Buy stuff like Christmas gifts and Gift Cards at Kohls or JC Penney and then pay the Chase bill with my Discover card? Would Discover count paying my Chase bill as an online purchase if I do it online? I recently changed my credit habits and learned to live within my means so I would have no problem paying the Discover bill as I would space out purchases from now until Christmas. Thanks for your help!
1. Those categories you mention don't start until Oct. 1.
2. Paying Chase with Discover or vice versa is considered a balance transfer and you don't earn rewards and you would pay 3% for the balance transfer amount.
ok thank you for your help! dodged a bullet there!
A good way that you CAN increase your rewards is to do all your online shopping through the lender's rewards shopping portals. Chase has the Ultimate Rewards Mall, and Discover has ShopDiscover. These can give you anywhere from 1% to 20% more on your purchase than simply using the card alone.
For example, right now the Quarterly reward category for Chase Freedom is Kohl's, which gets you 5% back. But if you shop online through the UR mall you get an additional 10% back for a total of 15%.

If only we all lived in Brazil where you can earn miles/points for paying off one card with another.
