Q re: Citi DC WEMC

I just had an interesting call with Citi EO. I took a HP a while ago to move limits and make my DC $15k. I asked at the time if it would/could be WEMC. I was told DC doesn't come in WEMC. Today I got a call from same EO guy to confirm that the change 'was approved'. I'd seen it on my account yesterday. Since I had him, and he confirmed that he was the same guy I talked to the first time, I questioned the WEMC issue again. I let him know my 'friend' (kenro and others on here) have DC that is a WEMC and he had said it wasn't possible. He went away for a while and came back with a very, very odd statement. He said that some cards are issued as WEMC, but they don't come with the WEMC benefits. Say WHAT?

I figure this would be an interesting topic for folks here. What would you make of this?

I have WEMC in Arrival+ which I likely won't have going forward. And I figured if I can get it, might as well. However reviewing the added benefits, I doubt I'll need anything other than on the off-chance that I rent a car, the rental car thing (read on tpg comparison) would be about the only benefit that WE has that W doesn't that I could see using.

Side note. I also had him transfer me to an Online Specialist and he got the word Diamond off my online account. Evidently that and Citi MC were nicknames I'd given to the two cards at some point in the past. OS was able to unlink and re-link my cards and get the default names attached to them. Happy to see Double Cash and last four digits next to my DC instead of Diamond (I'd PC'd).

Aha, that's the smoking gun! I knew it.

They're probably issuing them as WEMCs to collect higher swipe fees. That's why only the DCs that were PCd from another product that happened to be a WEMC report as "Flexible Spending", whereas the DCs that were direct apps report as "Credit Cards".

Sorry to bring such an old thread back from the dead.

Curious if that's even legal to issue a card as WEMC and collect the higher swipe fees without providing the benefits.

Re: Q re: Citi DC WEMC

My Double Cash is a World Elite Mastercard and I spoke with Citi about a month ago and they reviewed the World Elite benefits with me over the phone. So I don't believe the original statement is correct, sorry! Smiley Happy

+1

I think the Citibank  rep got confused and met the DC will not have the same benefits as card like Prestige or Executive Advantage.

Did they mention NPSL as one of the features?

Re: Q re: Citi DC WEMC

The confusion is that MasterCard now allows World Elite to be issued with credit lines starting at $100, the invite only requirement was lifted in 2012 and 99% of the benefits (airport lounge, premium concierge, $1M+ insurance, other extended amenities) are now entirely optional. Previously World Elite had a guaranteed suite of benefits but now with the dilution of the product, those benefits are limited to more high end World Elite cards. Some benefits are open to any WE card but effectively gate off access only to those with sufficient income and most importantly, a higher line of credit.
