Q4 Discover

Looks lke Q4 has been confirmed on Discover's site. It will be Amazon, Department Stores, and Sam's Club.

Amazon is pretty usual, Department stores they did last year I believe, and Sam's Club is obviously a jab at Freedom, although not as good since Freedom is any wholesale club.

Pretty lackluster for me. Not a big Amazon or department store shopper and no Sam's Club in the area. Hopefully someone else will benefit but my Discover is basically going to be SD. Might be useful for a Christmas gift or two at Kohl's but that's about it

Re: Q4 Discover

Eh...I like it better than Q3, but it's still not that exciting.

I already use SallieMae for 5% Sam's Club gas and Amazon, and I use Cash+ for 5% department stores currently.   I guess this would give me flexibility to choose another 5% category for Cash+ in Q4.   However, it looks as if the 5% on Sam's Club purchases are in-store, not at the pump; the workaround this would be to buy GCs inside and use at the pump, but I already have two other CCs that render that an unnecessary step.

Re: Q4 Discover

Agreed with you guys. I already SD my Discover for the rest of the year. The only time I will use it if I buy something through Amazon but that is on an occasion.

Re: Q4 Discover

I'll use it easily on Amazon before Christmas, but only because it is my first year and I get the double bonus. Otherwise I'd just use Amazon Store card.

" Department Storesare defined as retailers selling a wide variety of merchandise, with separate checkout counters in each department."   This is not a very clear way to give the information.  Do they go in each store and check where the registers are?  Kohls does not have separate checkout counters in each department.  A list like Amex has would be much more clear.

Kohl's has always come up as a department store regardless of which card I use, including Discover, but you're right, their definition is a little odd and nothing is guaranteed

Re: Q4 Discover

Meh I'll take it.  Sallie/Freedom cover Amazon/Sam's but department stores are ok I guess.  I tend to shop for others for christmas at department stores and this prevents me from having to use cash+ for department stores (their category is flaky on that front anway).  Probably use cash+ for dining 2% and fast food 5% and just use it for exclusive dining in the 4th quarter.

Kohl's is considered a Department Store.  Department stores would include stores like Macy's, Nordstrom (also Nordstrom Rack), Bloomingdales, Sears, JCPenney, Dillards, etc.   These differ from discount stores (Wal-Mart, Target, Kmart, etc).

Re: Q4 Discover

Thanks for the heads up for Amazon but i already get 5% with the store card as a statement credit.

So what would be the advantage using discover, the 5% returned as cash payout from them?

Sorry if i seem sometimes confused on the differences between various cash back card offers like this.

Also if you already have a Sam's Club MC i suppose that the Discover 5% would be of another benefit?

Discover has more flexibility in ways you can redeem.  Amazon Prime is strictly statement credit; Discover has that, but also includes GCs, direct deposit, Amazon credit, and charitable donation.   Also, if you're in the first year of Discover, they double your rewards.

If you have Sam's Club MC, Discover would be better to use in-store for 5% cashback (vs. 1% for Sams Club MC).   However, Sam's Club MC would be better to use at the gas pump.
