Ever since I signed up for offers I have been softed 4 times by amex. I also was never pre selected for anything before I did either. So they softed me at some point, then came the offers online. Also got a mail offer for Green.

I'm hoping they start SP'ing me as well!

OK

I just paid off the Discover Card entirely ... I have a 0.00% utilization rate.

I am going to wait until Discover reports my updated balance (middle of April) and then pull the trigger.

I'll let you guys know how it turns out, because if I dont get it I will be asking about reconsideration strategies!

Thanks for all the advice ... this place is great!

Re: Really want the Gold AMEX ... Do I have a shot yet?

Now when I callto do the app online, how does that work?  Do I take that opportunity to explain the ding (late payment)?  It wasn't really my fault (my student loans are paid for by my family business as a form of compensation, and they weren't paid for a couple of months without my knowledge), but do they actually accept that as an excuse?  Worse, I could see how it could be spun to make me look worse, that I am relying on others, and I am not credit worthy on my own ...

Thoughts?

Are you going to call or are you going to do the app online?

I'd say you are jumping a bit ahead of yourself. Apply first, see if you are approved/denied. If approved, congrats. If denied, THEN deal with what happens next when reconning.

Sorry

I meant doing the app over the telephone line.

Why not app online?

When you call, the CSR just relays your information on the online app, just as you would.  For a decline, unless there's inaccurate information on your CRA, Amex doesn't recon.
