Re: Relieving cosigned credit card debt $10K

The best option would be for her to get a loan in her own name, give you the funds to pay the card, the cards are then closed, and she has to pay the loan.  Its between her and the bank at that point.

As this would be best option, I don't see a College student getting a 10k credit line to BT this debt to especially if some of it is joint in her name too... the maxed out cards, short history, and income will get her declined super fast.

Where I am kind of confused is you say you have 750 credit score but are unable to get any new credit cards or a consolidation loan... is this 10k your only credit card debt and your only open credit cards?

I have been through the strained relationships with family and loved ones, over money and debt (from both sides).

In the long run, money is never as important as relationships.

Re: Relieving cosigned credit card debt $10K

As others have said, you're pretty much stuck on this one.

If you're solid enough in your payments on your house and car that they'd survive a Chapter 7, you should be able to get a loan secured against them or some other asset (401k, etc) which is probably a substantial number of points below the APR on the unsecured card debt.  It's clearly not as ideal as having the straight income to pay it off, but it's better than taking the BK which would simply prolong your current situation (having issues getting personal loans) for another 3-4 years, and I assure you rebuilding your credit from a BK is just not worth the hassle nor is it anything remotely close to fun... you're going to get stuck with things like a 20% APR car loan in the future taking that route.

You've worked to get your credit to where it is already, there's got to be something you can leverage without taking the nuclear option.  Work it out however you have to with your daughter on the back-end, if she's trying to pay anything off at all there's some responsibility there so there's some hope of eventual repayment if that's a concern.  Also if you BK, the creditors just stick your AU daugther with the loans and she almost assuredly defaults then too... while that may be karmedic justice in this case, nobody wins there: not you, not your daughter, and not your creditors. Find any other way, for that matter it's in your creditor's best interests to help you find a way to do so.

Talk to a credit counseling agency if nothing else, you have a serious problem, get professional assistance.

Edit:  I somewhat hate to say this but it may be feasible to have DD fall on her sword for her own debt issues rather than you take the BK.  You're probably stuck with the debt you've cosigned for anyway at this point, it relieves the burden of the two accounts in her name, and there's a longer window of time to recover in her case than yours and maybe that frees her up enough to help pay the cosigned accounts off.

You won't make much headway with minimum payments only.  Your daughter should try to find a part time job to get you out of this mess that she's created for you.  Once you get your balances down a bit, hopefully you'll have more options - CLI, BT offers, etc....

You MAY be able to get a decent APR loan with Prosper or Lending Club, but APR's here vary wildly.  You can pre-qual with a soft pull....
