I'm really starting to think that possessing a Sallie Mae is an indicator of being a credit/credit card freak (us). I have never seen a Sallie Mae credit card outside of these circles, and I generally pay attention to what people pull out, just out of curiousity - and I live in a busy urban area. I'm sure Sallie markets it somewhere, but I've just never seen or heard of it otherwise. Maybe I just don't get out enough.
I saw a banner ad once for the Upromise card. Even that surprised me a bit. I'm totally fine with this card being our little secret...would hate for it to get nerfed.

Yep, cards become fashionable in this forum! Another example is the now infamous duck/beaver card, which must have got lots of signup from here and is probably not at all common outside of OR. And I'm sure there are many other examples.
IMO, the big difference is that the SM has useful features.

The Duck was great for those "I want a high CL" types, but they also required clean profiles. Who knows....maybe Sam's Club MC will be the next big thing?

I guess that explains why all the myfico groupies keep following me everywhere I go.

Probably risking immediate nerfing but: I don't think the card will get major nerfing (maybe at worst reducing bookstore to $250 a month as well) because the card is in a great place, as being useful to consumers but not a huge risk to the issuer. If you spent the max in each category, spending $1,200 a month, you would get $60 back, a total of $720 a year. And that's not all loss to the issuer, as they get swipe fees, some pay interest etc. And of course the vast majority aren't maxing each category every month.
Compare that to the MS cards like Blue Cash, pre-nerf BCP or 5x TYP, where some were getting back $5K per MONTH or more.

RIght, but remember how fickle these things are. One day you are the idol of the group, next "Oh, that's the strange guy with two of those Sallie Mae. How totally 2013!" and they are on to the next thing.

sams mastercard will be the next big thing on here. I wish they could have come out with it sooner, I would have applied but now i am firm in the garden...
It's a little funny when I'm out with people that have one of the more popular cards that they know I also have, but I end up using a far-less known card to pay for something that the popular card is covering at the moment. It's happened to me with both the Freedom/Forward and the BCE/Sallie Mae when paying at restaurants and grocery stores, and it's always a little sad telling people that the (good) Forward no longer exists. I hope the Sallie Mae stays relatively unknown so it doesn't meet a similar fate.
