The explanation I got was that: Traditionally "store credit cards" have lower credit limits than Visa, Mastercard, Discover et all. GEMB said that it doesn't issue credit limits (much) higher than mine for Sam's credit cards unless it is a Discover network card.

It seems that higher credit limits are available at Sam's only if one applies for or converts to the Discover card.
The conversion is supposed to be easy. No hard inquiry and original credit card issue date is maintained. No credit score hit....just a higher credit limit.
