I am to the point now where I have slowed down, only opening 4 cards over the past 2 years. That has mostly happened because of such a change in my credit scores after rebuilding. Once those were opened, and with better CL, I closed many of the starter or rebuilder cards I had and haven't really applied for anything unless it was a card I was intended to get. I don't really get caught up in the frenzy of applying for credit anymore because I don't really use the credit that I have now. Personally, my focus is moreso on paying down debt (car, student loans) and saving for another home. I guess it depends where you are in the stages of your credit because when you are rebuilding and starting to get approved for better cards, it's easy to start apping for everything. IMO.
For me slow and steady wins the race. I've gotten a new card every 5-6 months since starting to apply for cards but I'm done for now as I have all the cards I want.
I am following a fairly slow and steady path.
March 2015 Secure Credit card.
July 2015 Secured loan.
October 2015 finally generated a FICO score.
December 2015 was a big month. Got an Amazon Prime card, a Walmart card, and a Wayfair card. Paid off loan. Got a denial for a CLOC.
January 2016 got new secured loan.
March 2016 will apply for Orbitz car.
June 2016 will apply for Lowes card.
September will get a new car.
Then will stay in the garden until I can buy a house.
I think each of us have to set goal and then plan how to best reach them. As our scores rise we have to resist the temptation to get new credit that we don't really need.
