Shell and Sunoco and how mean PenFed is (page 3)

[ Edited ]

A few weeks ago the hub and I both went on a wild spree and each of us separately applied for the Shell card and the Sunoco card (really what happened is that I told him via IM that I was applying and he had to be a copycat and secretly do the same thing - I think he wanted to one-up me.)

So I reported that he got rejected for both.  How wrong I was!

It turns out that it's true they were "unable to approve" him for the Shell card, but that was probably because my approval was instant and they had added him as an authorized user at my request.  Maybe he was flagged for that reason so they didn't think he needed his own account.  It's fine because we each have our own Shell cards even if they link back to my account only.

As for Sunoco, they do not have instant approval, and I called and found out that I was approved.  I think we assumed that he was rejected because when we called the automated line and heard "not able to approve" we assumed it was referring to the Sunoco.  (Same number for all Citi consumer cards.)  So yesterday I got my Sunoco card in the mail and he got one in a separate envelope. I thought that was strange but assumed they were both for my account.  After a while we realized that we have different credit limits.  The reason his was in a separate envelope was because he got his own account!  They did not add him as an authorized user to my Sunoco as I had requested on application, probably because they actually look over applications manually (as opposed to Shell) and they saw that he applied for his own account.

To sum up, if the above was "tl;dr"

I got a Shell, and the hubs is an authorized user.

We each got our own Sunoco cards.

Re: I just love Shell and I love Sunoco, too (I guess that means I have to love Citi)

I'm going to keep bumping this until someone congratulates me or, better yet, gives opinions on Shell and Sunoco gasoline.  Which is better?  Like one and hate the other?  Hate both?  Like both?

We get 5 cents off per gallon with Shell but only if we buy 45 gallons or more per month.  With Sunoco, it's 5 cents off per gallon with no minimum purchase.

Does it hurt a little econobox car like my '99 Suzuki Esteem if you put higher-octane gasoline, like their 93 or 94 octane, in it (other than being a potential waste of money)?  I want to experiment and see what grade gives me the best mileage.  We also just got a new car and saw that the mileage was not as good as advertised.  The manual says "use 87 octane or higher" (like the vast majority of new little cars - it's just a Kia Soul.)  But then we read the fine print on the mileage estimates and saw that it said, "tested on 91 octane."  Advice from mechanical people?   At this point I'm not as concerned about saving money as much as increasing MPG - it's the principle of it at this point.  But does it hurt your car to use higher octane if you have a little putt-putt car like our two cars are??

Unless the manual says that higher octane fuel is required, or your engine knocks on regular fuel, there is no point to using anything higher octane than regular.  It won't damage your car, but it won't give any significant increase in mileage either.

CONGRATS!!!!!!

Its pretty much wasting money putting higher octane in putt putt cars. Stick with the 87!

Re: I just love Shell and I love Sunoco, too (I guess that means I have to love Citi)

Congrats!

You asked about Shell and Sunoco....I hate Shell and love Sunoco.

But here in S Fl Shell is always the highest priced gas around - by at least 15 to 18 cents per gallon just for regular, self serve! For example, checking my trusty Gas Buddy for my area right now, regular self serve for Sunoco runs $3.979 to $4.039/gallon. And right down the street less than 2 miles away the Shell stations are $4.159 and the other a block away is $4.199 as of Apr 9 2012.

Its always higher at Shell and I can't figure out why people would pay the difference. JMO.

Re: I just love Shell and I love Sunoco, too (I guess that means I have to love Citi)

Only difference is more octane. More octane = more compression/temps needed to explode. Thus preventing premature explosion and loss of power. Ive never put regular in mine but read reports from people who have needing new valves and service. For .20 more, id take the gas. My view point has always been if you need to save money on gas by using regular then you have the wrong car.

Anyway congrats. :smileyhappy:

Congrats!  Apparently, I just heard a couple days ago, you can get money off per gallon buying things (coffee/donut, etc.) in the actual Sunoco stations.  I, personally, fill up with Shell fuel and have their card.  As someone mentioned above, they always seem higher than everyone else around but they have a deal with my local grocery store so I pay less anyway.  I also like their nitrogen-enriched gasoline (read the pump next time you're there...or it's online as well).

Anyway, congrats again!  What are your limits?
