So after I learned that i could use any card on amex network and add the deals on my card to earn more cash back (statement credit), i added the Exxon/Mobile one. Yesterday I went to pump 30.18 gas in my car but today the charge (which is still pending) shows $101.00.. It is pending so I am not sure if I should worry or not? I have never came acrossed this situation before.. In the past, on my boa 1-2-3 card, it was always $1 until it is posted. On sallie mae I believe it is the exact amount shows under the "temporary transaction" but this is the first time I used my fidelity amex card to pump gas.. And I am not sure what happened.. I got the receipt printed so everything should be reset after I leave. Also I was looking at my GPS at least 5 mins before I leave where I pumped the gas.. So guys? do you know what went wrong?

It happens with certain gas station when you use it they will have pending 100 dollar charge. It will! Usually go away after week or so.
It's just a hold. Give it a couple days and it will be adjusted. I once had a station do a $250 hold for a $40 tank of gas.
What others said, it is a pending hold. If you do not want it to happen you have to pay inside. If you are ever bored, standing around, pumping your gas you can read the stickers on the pump... One of them talks about the pending authorization.
It's expected. Don't worry about it...

I usually get a $100 hold on my BCE, so I'm guessing that might be the AMEX gas transaction max. However, the other day, I used my Amex at a USA gas station and it stopped right at $50, so that might be a policy of that particular station.
You can avoid that $100 dollar hold by prepaying inside....that's what I do to get around that.

It happens at some gas stations, they do a charge of $100 or more sometimes to make sure you have enough money/credit on your card before you start pumping. On the other hand if you have less than $100 on there you may get a big fat decline and will have to prepay inside. Kind of lame but it will be reimbursed in a few days.
Just curious, why do holds matter when they never post?
