I guess more of an FYI for other seeking the same thing. I was able to successfully upgrade my 10 year old Platinum Select Mastercard to Cash Rewards card over live Chat with Capital One. It took a little bit of effort tho...
The first rep after 5 minutes of chatting said, "I'm ready to put in a request for credit limit increase." At that point, I was like, 'hold it!' That's not what I asked for!!!
After being transferrd to a specialist, he assured me that no credit pull has occurred. (I hope so. I'll know soon enough). After that it was painless, I was upgraded and was ensured that I would keep the same acct number and it would not show up as a new account and that no credit pull was made.
BTW, I already had no AF with my Platinum Select MC, I think was grandfathered cause i think new Plat Sel MC has AF associated with them. I guess it may be tougher to get upgraded (PC'd) if you are already paying AF.
Congrats on your upgrade! I actually did the same thing about a month ago - I used the chat feature to upgrade my 9-year old Plat Visa that had a $39 annual fee. They upgraded my card to the Cash Rewards Visa Signature card with no annual fee. My APR remained the same at 12.15%. And I'm now getting 0% balance transfer offers on my online account.
Now that I'm getting 1.5% cash back, I'm actually using this card when I can't get 5% or 2% with my other cards. Never thought a Cap One card would be in my card rotation, but it is now. In my eyes, they have really stepped up and taken care of me.

In terms of general best rewards (cash back) priceline visa (barclays) and Fidelity Amex (FIA) has best rates, but I thought why not! convert if I can. normally, i wouldn't care but I'm tyring get a mortgage within next months and i want my reoprts to be squeaky clean.

CONGRATS!
I would def. keep an eye on your reports the next couple of days to see If they did slip a HP in.
Confirmed. No HP reported on any of the CRs
Congrats on the upgrade!!
I really think that Cap One is actively working in the back channels to improve their overall image by improving accounts for good paying customers.
It would not surprise me to see a new Cap One high level card come out in the next year or so as more and more of the folks getting upgrades and CLIs now, step into the next level.
+1 I agree and think they have truly made an attempt to change and retain customers
