on a serious note, what would be top 5 cards now?

Top 5 cards for what? That's pretty much impossible to give an answer to. Travel/Cash back? A person's credit history. Travel partners they like to use. Banks they use. What they use their credit cards for. etc.

For me my top 5 cards (some of these I have others I plan on getting) are:

Chase ink bold (x5 on phones/cable/internet- replaces CSP which will get downgraded to CS)

chase freedom (x5 rotating category for UR earning, paired with ink bold)

Amex everday preferred (scheduled for a Jan app so I can cancel PRG and keep my MRs, this will likely become my non-cat spend card)

Barclay Arrival plus card (maybe a jan app. Good signup bonus, diversity of lenders by adding a barclays card, important to have a travel cash back card for incidental redemptions, also its a MC so I don't have only visa. good for first year at least)

Citi Hilton (gives gold level status with hilton, free night covers AF, keeps my relationship with citi going when I get rid of my citi AA exec)

Honorable mentions: Chase Hyatt card & amex spg (which I will probably get rid of and pick up spg business card.

This!    As an example, take what should be the simplest, what card should I use for non-category spending?   And if we restrict that more to just cashback cards, you still have the 500+ post thread on the Citi Double Cash, with people arguing between that, Fidelity, Arrival Plus and Cap One Quicksilver.    So even that depends on your preferences and needs (FTF, minimum redemption etc), everything else depends on those, reward goals (points, what type of points etc), spending patterns etc.

Re: TOP 5 MUST HAVE CREDIT CARDS

Here are my top, in the order that I use them.

1 - Discover It - For the 5% Category

2 - Chase Freedom - for the 5% category

3 - US Bank Cash + - Usually keep this at 5% for Dining unless one of the top 2 have a dining category, then I change it randomly. Also Pharmacies 3%

4 - AMEX Blue Cash Preferred - Groceries only 6%. ( Gas if not covered above for 3% )

5 - AMEX Hilton Honors - Everything that doesnt fit above goes here.

Re: TOP 5 MUST HAVE CREDIT CARDS

If you don't travel and don't spend enough on groceries to justify CSP-

1)Sallie Mae (%5 groceries, %5 gas, %5 bookstores[amazon counts as a bookstore] )

2)Cash+ (5% in two categories[dining recomended] 3% drug stores)

3)Chase freedom or Discover it (%5 in categories- the categories of both cards overlap quite a bit. I kinda regret getting both)

4)Fidelity AMEX or citi Double cash (%2 on everything else you buy)

5) and I guess a travel card if you want Smiley Tongue or the Better Balance reward if you want one that will just make money.

No annual fee for any of these.

| BoA BBR 5k | Discover it 1k | freedom 2.2k | Fidelity AMEX 1.5k | Sallie Mae 1k | AARP 2.2k | BJ's PPlus 3.7k |
