OK, thought experiment. You are driving, and TO YOUR HORROR, you find you are exceeding the speed limit by 5 miles an hour. Do you drive (at or below the speed limit) to the local police station and explain that you were speeding and can they give you a ticket so you can pay? Sort of the same, but speeding is much more dangerous to others, so volunteering for the fine is certainly the right thing to do. As I'm sure you know and do.
Not analogous at all. Exceeding the speed limit is breaking an often arbitrary rule imposed without your consent by powers you have little control over. If you haven't harmed anybody or put anybody at risk, nothing is owed to anybody.
Ordering something that YOU want and YOU receive because of your own initiative is a completely different situation.
I don't think it's a horrible thing to not seek out the seller in this case, but I can only say that if it were me, my conscience would bother me if I never paid for merchandise I ordered. I believe contacting the seller is the right thing to do, but I can also understand why somebody wouldn't do it.
No, you clearly consent to obey the speed limits when you get a license and choose to drive. Speeding can cause accidents and kill people, so it's hardly always arbitrary. Someone who has lost a child to a speeding driver would not agrree with your charcterization. But I don't have a problem with your current formulation (this is what I do, but understand others wouldn't). Your original post referred to the "right thing to do" as if it was an absolute truth. And the OP had clearly stated that such points were not what he was after.
@longtimelurker wrote:Not sure but I wouldn't necessarily put this in terms of posted and pending. AFAIK, there is nothing to prevent the merchant, when they realize that the money was not received, just reissuing the charge, in the same way a merchant might send you a bill. I would expect that this has a long permissible time frame.
I used to preorder all sorts of things online (CDs, DVDs, etc.) and I would preorder some items months in advance. The online store would put a temporary authorization on the card until the order shipped so it appears merchants can charge the card for a good amount of time after the order is placed.

Can, but doesn't necessarily.

Just as well! And usually doesn't. But it is arguably worse than not paying a merchant as a societal ill. Just most people here do it so it seems OK.
For back order items it is quite common that the pending charges drop and once the merchandise ships get posted again. So do not worry you will see the charges coming......merchants can process payments directly without authorization but would lose the money if the charge gets declined that is why it usually is with pre-authorization and processed in the time frame required to guarantee the charges. (Best example are gas stations where the temp auth is higher than the actual charge) imagine you fill up first and the transaction is declined afterwards
