Why?
5% categories no AF cards are always nice to have.
Just because we can. Nah, they don't have any AF so why not.

+1
and the fact i do have a chase checking account so i get 10% more
Also my Discover CL is $1k and Chase freedom is $3,500.
Honestly I wanted another free fico score card, my discover will rarely be chosen over the freedom when they overlap.
I app'd for a bunch of cards when I was in college - my FirstUsa turned into Chase, and I had a regular Discover. As my credit score got better, and I learned more (here) about the different rewards offerings I converted to IT and Freedom.
The short answer: I got both cards during a college spree and never closed them to keep my history
Discover: Free Fico, ShopDiscover, customer service, and the wonderful 5% cashback on everything online during the 4th quarter
Freedom: 10% bonus for checking, easy way to get around the $1500/quarter limit on the Discover since they do overlap so much (very useful during the 4th quarter particularly: $1500 for amazon through Freedom, $1500 for everything else through Discover), and it's a visa for when Discover isn't accepted
Why both? Its america we always want more. Getting 5% back on restaurants btw the two for 6 months month total is the real reason for me. Sallie mae takes care of the amazon 5% and gas 5% all the time. No AF and depending on when you apply you can get a great sign up bonus.
