Backdating is a special feature that is exclusive to amex. When you are an amex member you get a member join date (say oct 2013) then every new card that you ever get from them will have a member date of 2013. So if you were to get a card in Jan 2014 it would actually show that the account was opened Jan '13. This is helpful for your average age of accounts and why members always advocate applying for new amex cards in January to maximize this effect.
