It's good that you're asking questions before applying for a UR earning card. Far too many make the mistake of not doing that ahead of time. It's just some of the online articles go into great depth about the various travel partners so they are a very good resource. Of course, feel free to ask more questions here if they arise.
Just to clarify, you do NOT need a Chase United MileagePlus credit card in order to transfer Ultimate Rewards points over to United miles. All you need is a miles account with United.
The value of the MileagePlus credit cards is primarily in the perks, not in the everyday earning of miles. The MileagePlus Explorer card perks include:
-- miles don't expire
-- greater award seat availability
-- first bag free
-- Group 2 boarding
-- two single visit United Club passes
Taken together, these perks offset the $95 annual fee. The MileagePlus Club card has a different set of perks and a higher annual fee.
