Re: Walmart Card as Second Card?

Had a mini-panic attack, contemplating whether or not to submit that app... and they approved me for the Walmart Discover @ $950! Can't wait Smiley Very Happy

Thanks for the help guys!

(Now someone please stop me before I go ahead and apply for a Capital One Student Journey card...)

Re: Walmart Card as Second Card?

congrats.

Eh I dont care much for cap one.  If you dont mind the 3 hp's I would say go for it but be prepared for a low limit card for life.

Where do you shop more walmart or amazon?

You have the discover card which means you can use it anywhere that accepts discover and not just at walmart.

I think amazon and walmart have the same criteria.  I apped for both in the same day within 10 min

Re: Walmart Card as Second Card?

To be honest, I do shop at Amazon a lot, and quite a bit more often than Walmart.  I just for some reason thought that Amazon would be harder to get than the Walmart.

Is the Walmart Discover card still GE-backed, or is it Discover only?  I'd like to try for the 4-month credit limit increases if it's GE.

I also hope it makes it more likely for Discover to take me in for one of their prime cards down the road.

Edit:  Also not sure if I want to waste the 3 hard pulls, but I don't plan to apply for anything else until the Walmart one from today clears next year anyway, so I might as well to get a third line going, but still nervous doing another app so soon.

Re: Walmart Card as Second Card?

Do you travel at all (as 3+ flights a year)?  If so, I'd go with the Forward.  The points are 1:1 for booking flights, so you're getting 5% cash back from restaurants/bars and Amazon.  It's a great card for a young person.  You'll also get the  full 5% value for paying student loans, which is relevant for you.  The Forward has great rewards, but it is Citi's entry level card, which means you would have a great shot of approval.  A lot of people get it as their first revolving credit account.

I have the More card also.  It is great for ShopDiscover (5% or more on pretty much any major website you can think of outside of Amazon), but it's is not a good everyday use card because you don't get 1% cashback until you hit a 3k spend threshold.  The rotating categories are hit or miss.  I think you also have a solid shot of approval.

Do you have a Chase checking account?  If so, I think you'd definitely be approved for the Freedom, but they may give you a toy limit (Freedom was my gf's first CC, but her limit was only $500.  She had a few year history of student loans too).

Chase Sapphire Preferred - 5.6k (3/13) | Amex Premier Rewards Gold - NPSL (1/13) | Chase United MileagePlus Explorer Visa Signature - 9k (1/13) | Amex Delta Gold - 6k (9/12) | Citi Forward Visa - 10k (10/12) | Discover It - 2k (2/12) | Chase +1 Visa - $300 (2/11)

I almost forgot about the student loan payment feature of Citi Forward. That fact, plus the OP shops a lot at Amazon leads me to believe that the Citi Forward for College Students is the card for him Smiley Happy

I'd probably steer away from the Capital One Journey for Students. Many myFICO forum members don't like Capital One.

With a Wells Fargo, Walmart Discover and possibly a Citi Forward for College Students, OP should be set for gardening. Based on spending habits of the typical college student, I bet the Citi Forward gets the most use.

Re: Walmart Card as Second Card?

Thank you for the info guys.

I'd like to wait on the Citi Forward until next year (assuming they accept part-time grad school enrollment as "Student" criteria) to be on the safe side for approval odds, with the limited history and number of inquiries I have.

An off-topic question, I'm not sure if I'm able to pay my federal student loans with a card, on the Direct Loans website, it only allows bank withdrawal.  Unless I can direct bill payment from the Citi website to my Direct Loans account?

Re: Walmart Card as Second Card?

I was going to suggest Citi forward for amazon but being you want to hold off on that and are kinda hinting at wanting a 3rd tradeline I see no issue with apping for the amazon store card.

yes your walmart discover is backed by GE.

No having it has nothing to do with discover itself.  it just runs off the discover network

Re: Walmart Card as Second Card?

If you were approved for Walmart Discover, then you'll have no problem getting Amazon Visa - I would go for it, so they INQ fall-off at the same time, next year.

5/2012: 560 credit scores across the board
12/2014: 750+
3/2017: 780+
11/2019: 833
2/2023: Experian via Chase United Explorer CC pull - 891

Eh that may be true but Walmart Discover is still backed by GE which is leniant and amazon visa is backed by Chase which is not so leniant.

Its obviously up to the op here but if the op is after higher limits and wants a dead shot at approval I would go for amazon store card.  Has way more potential of CLI's and they are all soft pulls.  You breathe at chase and they will HP you

Re: Walmart Card as Second Card?

CONGRATS OP! You got approved for the Discover version straight off and not bad for a starting CL! Yay! Don't forget to enroll in online statements for your FREE monthly FICO! Smiley Happy Walmart Discover is still backed by GE unfortunately but good news is that it will grow with you and you can request a CLI every 4 months! GE isn't really conservative. More generous than anything!

As of 2017, rebuilding...
