My step dad never has had a credit card or debit card. He is a cash only man. He pays for everything in cash. He does have a savings account but no checking account. He saves money very well, lives a frugal life, and him and my mom seem very happy that way. They have the things they want but just may take longer to get them so they can pay in cash and not worry about interest or anything. House, vehicles, everything paid in cash.
Some people choose that because that's the way they want to do things. It's not the wrong way to do something, it's just a different way.
