My mom was going to add my as an authorized user on one of her cards (and knowing what I know now about amex I wish she had ) but someone told her it wouldn't help build my credit, so we got my own. Had to have my mom be a guarantor. Started with a $1000 limit. 3 years later, $5500, no guarantor, PC'd to a Cash rewards.
looks like similar situation to me
I think it was a Providian Platinum Visa card and I think I was in my 20's. Got an Amex not long after though.
I was 16 and got a visa classic from the local credit union with a $500 limit. It stayed that way until I closed it out a few years ago. I also got an auto loan at 16. Of course mom and dad co signed for both. I was a credit nerd back then and convinced them of the importance of building a good credit history. Boy did it pay off
Capital One Secured with a $200 limit in 2011. I was 18.
My first credit card was actually from when I lived in Japan, it was an Epos Visa and being able to get it as a foreigner with NO credit history in Japan was not easy, lol. I was 27 and decided to bite the bullet because I wanted it to buy from online Japan stores that only took Japan-based cards. I got a 200,000 yen limit!

AU on my husband's CapitalOne MC in August 2012. I was 37. I got my own first card in October 2012.
My parents made me terrified of "credit cards". Installment loans and a dick ex are what got me into credit problems... the economy crashing at the end of the decade is what finished me off. LOL.
