When AMEX is going to hard pull?

It's said that when you are already a member of AMEX and get rejected, then AMEX will not do hard pull. But a search on board reveal that this is not right. Does anyone here has more information concerning this topic? Thanks!

Current Cards: BOA Better Rewards (2.5k), Citi Forward (2k), AMEX Blue Cash Preferred (6k), AMEX SPG (7.5k), DISCOVER (1k), Chase Freedom (7k).

Credit Karma: 752, Credit Sesame: 736.

The info you found is not correct

Fact current Amex customers applying for new cards

SP if denied HP if approved

Before you app think...
Have you done your research of the CC?
Does it fit your spending?
Do you have a plan for the bonus w/o going into debt?
Can you afford the AF?
Do you know the cards benefits? Is it worth the HP?

Hmm... A simple search with key words "AMEX hard pull" lead me to this topic.

The person is already AMEX member but still hard pulled upon rejection.

There are also many others if you do a simple search.

Old thread and reading it I find it hard to believe of course YMMV but 99% have had the SP denied HP approved

OP - the topic you linked is from 2012.  Lots of policies and changes can usually occur from such timeframe.  The most recent discussion addresses this already.  However, bottom line as with anything, your experience and results can vary.

Re: When AMEX is going to hard pull?

Amex's policy hasn't changed in as long as I known. The problem is that people don't understand what is really going on.

For new customers, Amex is like any other lender. HP on application for card no matter what the results.

For current customers, the general rule is SP for denial and HP for approval. Why do some current customers get multiple HPs? Here is what is really going on.

As a customer of Amex, they SP your credit report on a semi regular basis for various reasons. If you have a SP on file, Amex will use that info to decide on a new application. However if you have no SP on file, they will HP your report. Hence some customers get two HP for two apps even if 2nd was rejected. This happens most often to new customers as Amex hasn't pulled a SP as 1st card is too new. Easiest way to avoid this issue is to check your experian to see if Amex soft pulled your report yet before applying.

Personally, however, if new customer, I recommend apping for 2-3 Amex products at once. Yes, it will likely result in multiple HPs no matter the results. However if experian, I have had luck getting them to remove multiple HPs in same month as duplicates. You could get 3 amexs for the price on one hp. Even if you can't get multiple hp removed, it really isn't a big deal as inquiries will age off together. It might cut your current app spree a little shorter than you would like, but in most cases likely to make no difference. Past a certain point extra inquiries barely affect your score and lenders who are inquiry shy typically get shy early.
