When to ask for Paypal Smart Connect CLI?

My husband has had  a Paypal smart connect for I want to say 3 years now. When he first applied I think he had a $300 limit, but, a couple months later they reduced it to a $100 limit. I'm not sure why it was reduced, nothing unusual had happened with it. Though, we did move about that time, so maybe it was in response to the address change.

I've been very lightly using it for the last 4 months or so to try to prevent it from being closed for inactivity. Unfortunately a $100 limit makes it difficult to use. There was an internal late between Dec and January; I didn't know it had a $5 balance on it. Promptly switched to E statements, because for whatever reason we didn't get a paper statement that month.

How long should we wait to ask for a CLI on that account?

His credit has no negatives on it, credit score is probably around 715 right this moment. In a couple weeks he should have a decent score increase because cards have been paid down.

Current Cards: Cap 1 Journey $3000, Cap 1 Playstation $2250, WFNNB Store Cards $2450 combined, Target $700, CareCredit $1700, Barclay Rewards Plat. Mastercard $1800, Old Navy $300, DCU Platinum Rewards Visa $2000, Swagbucks Rewards Visa $1000

Starting Score: 615 EQ (03-15-2012) 600 TU (03-21-2012 Barclays app) ) Ch.7 discharged 5/2009

Current Score: 671 EQ (09-27-2014 DCU) 660 TU (9/26/14 Barclays) Ex 688 (10/07/2014 Swagbucks)

I would ask for it now.  With GE cards, you can ask every 4th statement.

I have a Smart Connect that I got in 12/09, and in 2 years they upped me from my original limit of $600 to $800 ($100 each year).  After finding out here about being able to ask for CLI with only a SP, I asked for an increase in Feb of this year and was declined.  The next month, they auto CLI my limit from $800 to $1700 - go figure.

They don't allow online CLI requests anymore - you have to call the customer service number, and it's automated and painless.

Wow, that was surprisingly pleasant. My husband managed it all by himself.. lol.. Though he wimped out and only asked for $500. At least that makes it much easier to use for something like a case of diapers without being at 50% utilization.. He'll have to call again in 4 months and aim a little higher this time..

Congrats!  That was easy, wasn't it???  Love the GE cards for that reason.  Smiley Happy

I have 3 GE cards (PayPal SC, Amazon, and Walmart), and I'm going to ask for a Walmart CLI this month, as it's the 4th statement since I last asked in Jan, 12.  Wish me luck!

Best of luck!

I didn't realize Amazon was a GE card too. They seem to like my husband, his Carecredit has a $2500 limit. Might have to look into the Amazon card, we shop there a lot..

Yep, I love my Amazon card.  They constantly offer 0% financing offers depending on the amount you spend; for example, if you make a purchase of $149 or more you get 6 months at 0%, and you get 12 months at 0% if you make a purchase of $599 or more.  They also offer 0% interest on selected items throughout the year (especially around Christmas), sometimes up to 36 months.  And, at the same time they auto CLI'd my SmartConnect card in March, they also gave me an auto CLI on my Amazon card from $1100 to $1900.  I think you'd really like the Amazon card.

Re: When to ask for Paypal Smart Connect CLI?

Once you have had a GE account for at least 4 months I would start asking for CLI every 4 months and if declined 1 month, I would keep asking each month until you get it and then drop back to each 4 months. GE gets a little sensitive to high Util on their accounts for extended time or high util overall on the credit report, I have gotten really small increases with high util. but when paid down I have gotten better increases.

GE has a weird system, mostly they don't seem to care much about util to get approved but then they just don't extend to much above that unless that util goes way down.

I wonder if that's the answer as to why he got CL"d in the first place? The limit originally was $300, he bought close to a $300 item on Ebay. Back then we still thought that making payments gradually built credit.. lol.. So, we left the limit high for like 3 months, just paid aboslute minimum, and then paid it off either the 4th or 5th month. Right after he paid it off completely they credit limit decreased him to $100..

I guess that's a good reason right there to get credit limits up. If he would've had a $3000 limit they probably wouldn't have batted an eye at a $300 balance lingering for awhile..lol
