When to go for an Amex?

What should my credit look like before applying for an Amex card?  I would like to get a Blue Cash Back and a Green charge card.

Re: When to go for an Amex?

I also want an AMEX Costco card.  Will a 30-day late that's one year old automatically disqualify me?  How long should I wait until I apply?

Welcome to the forums!

I agree with CA. Amex wants to see 700+ FICO scores with no major derogs. They also hate inquiries. They have been known to deny based on too many inquiries if you have more than 1 reporting.

Here we go again...

A 30-day late that's a year old doesn't count as a major derog, does it?

Re: When to go for an Amex?

A 30 is never a major derog for the purposes of bucket assignment in FICO scoring.

But each lender has its own view of lates and how major they consider them to be. I got in with AmEx last year with a 13-month old 30 day, plus a generous littering of older 30's and a 60/90, but that was then.

Since you don't know what your EX score is anyway, freeze it and tell them to pull your best report.

That won't work. Amex will pull EQ or TU for the appliation and may give you the card. Then they will soft the EX report (they will be allowed to do so at that point) and close the card again if they don't like what they see there. I have just read a report by someone who had exactly this happen with an Amex Green. Closed after 2 weeks.

Re: When to go for an Amex?

It worked for all of my Amex cards. The credit rules don't revolve around any one persons experience. Amex is worth trying for, even if you get shut down you will have established a member since date for future use.
