Which card(s) to apply for?

DH has an EQ score of 748 as of 07/01/09 - ZERO baddies.

Here's what on his report:

1 old mortgage, pays as agrees, zero balance, closed

3 old auto loans, all pays as agrees, zero balance, closed

AU on 3 gas cards (2 are mine, 1 is his dad's)

He was approved for a Target Red card in June ($200 CL), but he can't seem to get approved for anything else - mostly I'm guessing b/c he doesn't have any current TLs that are his...

Any advice on which cards he would stand a chance of being approved for?  Here's what he's been denied on so far:  Hooters MC (pulled TU - 629), Cap One (pulled TU), GE Discount Tire (pulled EQ), GE Chevron (pulled TU), and Cabela's (pulled EQ).

If you have to HAVE credit to GET credit, where in the heck do you start?

Have you tried your local credit union? They could be more willing to work with someone with a thin credit file. I recommend NFCU if you qualify.
