Does that impact my aaoa?
It may help, and yes it will hit your AAoA the same as any new tradeline.
Personally unless I were willing to take an inquiry now and risk a denial taking a swing at my own account, I'd do it anyway if I were you to establish a member since data for future Amex backdating goodness assuming Amex is a lender you have any interest in between now and well, the rest of our lives.
Wouldn't be a bad idea just so that you can get the backdating at some point!

What wouldn't be a bad idea applying for his own account or being an AU?

Becoming an AU on my fiance's new AMEX TrueEarnings got me a preapproval letter and two approved AMEX accounts ($2000 and $10,000 limits) within 6 months. I would highly recommend getting on their radar as soon as you can as long as your Mom is a responsible buyer and will pay on time and not carry a large balance. AMEX seems to love getting a peek at your soft pulls every month before they commit to you.
I added my husband and my son as an AU on my $10k Amex and it already bumped my husbands scores in just 2 months. Definitely do it.
Well this rezoundingly sounds like a good idea. I was concerned about my AAOA initially but thinking about it once I have my own card with the member date established from the ACM it should mitigate the impact (I also imagine if I am no longer an ACM the tradeline would be removed?)
Forgive my ignorance on AU I am assuming that it would not be a credit inquiry.
This would also give Amex a view into my credit profile hopefully prompting them to look upon me more favorably?
Thanks for all of the replies looks like I'll add myself this evening.

I would apply on your own... if denied... then get added as AU.
