Bingo!  For some of us, we don't want to manage a ton of cards...might as well get rid of the ones lost in the shuffle.

In my experience, you should think hard about closing credit cards before you do.   Closing credit cards drops your FICO score, because it looks like you are irresponsible.  If you have to, make sure you know how it will affect your credit score before you do it. Pay off your balance before cancelling it, notify the credit card issuer by phone, and check your credit report to verify the cancellation was made by you, not the creditor.

 

And if you’re looking into others and don’t want to worry about closing credit cards in the future, make smart decisions now.  Research no interest cards or the card that’s best for you.  People who have these are often able to manage their charges and do not have to close credit cards.

I disagree that closing cards makes one look "irresponsible" and drops your score.  The score drop, if any, is because of higher utilization percentages.  By the way, this is a very old thread.
