international charges

So recently i had a customer from over seas and they swiped their card (Visa) and it gave him 2 options. 1. For US. currency charge or 2. His currency (Dont remember what country) charge.

IF i travel abroad and swipe any of my cards will it give me those options too or not since they are CC's. Im not sure if his was debit or credit.

On my most recent trip to thailand when i used my csp , the shop owner asked if i wanted it in baht or usd. I don't know if thats the case for every store or restaurant tho.

Alright, what would you select? Would it be baht since thats their currency? I guess if you travel the exchange rate would be helpful.

yes i think i chose baht because you pay an lot more going from baht to usd then other way around i think. If i recall you pay 37 baht to convert to one usd.

Re: international charges

Beware!  THis is called Dynamic Currency Conversion and is a real rip off (as the exchange rates are bad and you are still liable for FTF if applicable to the card).  ALWAYS get charged in local currency and you get a reasonable exchange rate.

See big thread: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/credit-card-programs/1542983-dynamic-currency-conversion-dcc-master-t...

or Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_currency_conversion   which has examples

From the FT thread:

While sold as a convenience to cardholders traveling outside of their home country, it is a pure profit play by the merchants. You may end up paying a fee of up to 8% over the purchase price for accepting DCC. Always decline DCC and asked to be billed in the local currency!

It is Visa and MC.  This is also cited as an advantage of Amex, they don't support it so you can't get caught out!

Well i would bring both , but discover acceptance rate is quite low , at least it was in thailand , i don't think i saw anywhere that took it. The acceptance order in thailand was mc, visa, amex, discover. So long story short probably you can use CSP almost anywhere.
