I wanted it to impress the girls.
So were they impressed??
Not till I got the Gold when they first started to offer those to me - then yes! LOL...

Got my first Amex in 1998 when I was in college. I didn't think anything of it at the time. It never even occurred to me that I might not get approved.
It was my second Amex that was a big deal for me. I was part way through my credit rebuilding stage when I decided to take a different job. I travel not infrequently for work. My previous employer had a corporate card which I was able to get even with my horrible credit. This was a lifesaver as the only other card I had was a Cap1 rebuilder that did not have a limit to support the business travel expenses. My new job didn't have a corporate card. We were expected to put all expenses on our own cards and submit for reimbursement. I really needed something with a higher limit and didn't want to have to discuss my credit problems with my employer. I applied for the Amex PRG with fingers crossed. My EQ FICO at the time was something like 654 (what I didn't know was that my EX was about 50 points higher). Instant approval. It was a huge relief as I was very self conscious about my financial troubles becoming public knowledge at work.
I was making $4.75/hr at the time and I thought I was a baller because I had an AMEX Green card. I went to Saks Fifth Avenue and bought a pair of Cole Hahn shoes that I knew I couldn't afford. My friend laughed at me and I returned them.

@bakalao LMAO!
@Anonymous. @LS2982. I was fiscally irresponsible back in the day. That card and the Optima were charged off. Many many years later, I contacted AMEX collections to pay off the balance and I was able to open a AMEX Blue with a member since date 1989.

I remember when I got my Amex Gold... I was so excited!!!... the first purchased I made was a TV. The interesting thing is that since I have my Amex cards, Gold and Platinum, I'm handling my money better than before since I need to pay them in full by the end of the month. It is awesome.
Love Amex.
