Re: using credit card for everyday purchases

For small purchases (under $5), I just go to Walgreens or a big supermarket.  They're indifferent if I charge 0.25 cents for a piece of gum.  The end result is I've just stopped shopping at small stores who are annoyed at small credit card purchases.

Re: using credit card for everyday purchases

I formerly used my debit card for small purchases but use credit cards for everything now.  Can't remember the last time I used my debit card, and it probably should just go in the ol' SD.  Better fraud protection to use credit cards for everything, regardless of the amount of purchase.  And I NEVER ever carry cash.

Re: using credit card for everyday purchases

I use my cc's for pretty much everything so that I can show usage and earn points/cash. If I am getting something cleap (under $5) or fast food, I always go with my boa credit card because it's easier to pay on a weekly basis and I really treat it like a debit card.

Re: using credit card for everyday purchases

I use my credit cards for everything. I get points, I build my credit history, I make my card issuers happy, and I can track everything on Mint.com. I especially like to charge small amounts to my Freedom card, which has the grandfathered 10&10 program - a $0.25 purchase nets me 11 UR points, which I value at $0.33, meaning the purchase was essentially making me money. I try not to do this with small, local merchants though because I feel bad about the swipe fees.

Re: using credit card for everyday purchases

If the purchase is less than $5.00, I pay cash, but I rarely have a purchas that is less than that.  A couple of the local bars in my area have minimum amounts for credit cards, so if I grab a drink somewhere, which isn't often, I pay cash those times too.  But other than that, I always use a credit card.  I haven't used a debit card in a long time, but my bank does make me swipe it when I go into the branch to make a deposit so I carry it with me.

Re: using credit card for everyday purchases

Since I got the Chase Freedom, I use that for most purchases.  I have to use my debit card at least 10 times a month to receive the 1.51% interest rate, otherwise it's 0.25%.  So I use the debit for small purchases, and the Freedom for everything else.

Re: using credit card for everyday purchases

i use cc's for most of my everyday purchases (unless i'm somewhere where there is a $4-5 minimum purchase to use a cc, then i'll pay cash if what i'm purchasing is under the minimum) i rarely carry more than $20 in cash any more (i once had my purse stolen with quite a large amt of cash in it and don't want to be in that position again!)

i use  BofA cash rewards mostly... or chase freedom (depending on 5% categories).

i received about $50 in starbuck's gift certificates for christmas... haven't used those gift cards at all yet. since starbuck's is 5% cash back with chase freedom for Q1, i've been using freedom at starbuck's for the 5% cb.  at the end of this month, when that category disappears from freedom, i'll use my gift cards Smiley Happy  and i'll go back to using my BofA for gas at 3% cb starting next month when chases's 5% gas category ends.

i also use cc's to pay my nursing license renewal (every other year, $150) and my car insurance (~ $360 every 6 months). since i need to pay those anyway, might as well get cash back (and neither one charges me a fee to use a cc)
