I've done the $5k on both of our cars. Max the dealer would let me put on the card.
Never thought about putting down payment for cars on a charge card, so will have to try that next time - especially seeing on here that people have had successes.
As for me, I really don't use my Amex cards that much so the biggest purchase on an Amex so far is $6500 for a stay at a Four Seasons booked through the FHR program.
I've put 5K down before for a car as well. I vowed never to do it again because I ended up getting cold feet with the car and with 5K down, it was too much to walk away from. (Not that 1K is smart either, but at least I could actually consider doing it)
Just put down 40K on my charge card for an engagement ring last week
You could have asked for your $5k back. That's one of the reasons to use a credit card. Also, many states have a 3 day period in which you can force a return on an automobile. A dealer isn't going to tell you this. I've always put the maximum amount the dealer is willing to accept on a credit card.
well i'm small-fry compared to most of you - around $1000 for a 70" TV - I liked the additional warranty
Going to a Chinese buffet and buying myself, mom, boyfriend and niece food. Around $68 I believe.
i think it was around 2.5k on my amex blue sky for a trip to mexico. this was the highest limit card i had at the time.

@heyarrnold wrote:$9k for the balance due on my car. The dealer allowed me to use a CC with no charge. I was going to be pay the balance off with cash, but used my Amex instead without a problem.
thats an excellent 9000 MR points for free basically
haha yeah, I always ask to use a CC for every situation. And if there is no fee, even better!
5k on engagement ring. 3% cash back at costco
I bought my Mac mini with my Amex Green, which came out to around $700. Being younger with an Amex, though, the Apple Specialist was wary, probably thinking that it was a stolen credit card. He had to ask his manager if he could process the transaction and such, but in the end, it all worked out.
