I notice a promotion going on with 75000 sign up bonus. I hesitate to apply because I still don't know what the point value is....
The deal seems to be too good to be true so i wonder if the point value is acutally kinda low...
2x on everything, 3x on grocery / gas.. 6x on participating hotel and no annual fee. It really makes me think that the value point is very low like 2-3 point = 1 cent.

The Points Guy values them at .5 cents so they're really towards the bottom of value

+1 I don't try to earn these points with credit card spend because the value is soo low compared to other chains.
I got the card in late April. The points seem to have the best value when you find an expensive room in a hotel that offers Points and Money. So you cut off some of the nightly rate, for x number of points, then pay a cash base rate. You can get close to a penny value per point in this situation.
The AMEX coding of stores is different from MC and VISA. The Fred Meyer where I shop does not code any of my three AMEX as groceries (one is non-Centurion but they are of course all using the AMEX network), and the cafeteria at work codes as "business other" so not dining. VISA and MC code both these places like you'd expect.
so it is possible to get good points return, but like a lot of travel rewards cards, you have to watch where you intend to redeem.
Hilton redemptions can be as bad as 3 tenths of a cent value, if you get a $149 room for 50,000 points.
Get a $279 room for 20,000 points plus $85 and you are looking at near a cent value per point.

if you get groceries or gas, 5 points, and work the redemption correctly, Hilton points can be worth a lot of value. Not a cashless transaction to get the room, but a translation of nearly a penny per point. If you watch those pennies
Marriott is similar, Club Carlson also. Hyatt is worth more, but you can't do points + cash with Hyatt. SPG I presume is worth more but haven't checked. But then with SPG, you earn less points per dollar spend.
If you are moving MR or UR or TY points to hotels, that is cra cra. Direct hotel credit cards, however, can make up for the low point value by piling more points into a category.
ahh
thanks for all the responding up there.. i was so tempting to app for this, but i guess now i am not that interested.. the value is too low low..

SPG earning is slower but their redemption requirements are lower too. Just stayed at two SPG properties and was happy with the return on points.

Your siggy does not look like you have any sort of travel card? Starting out with a specific hotel card is certainly possible, if one stays at that hotel chain a lot it can make sense. But as the "first travel card" it's often not the best choice. Your redemptions are tied in with the specific locations of that hotel. At least with airline cards, they go lots of different places.

+1 a more general travel card is probably the best way to start out. Hotel cards come later on unless you are a frequent user of specific hotel chains.
