If we're talking about self serve checkout and kiosks, I can see it. But I've never had a cashier/clerk tell me I had to give my zip code for them to complete a transaction.
ETA: I've had lots of clerks ask for my zip code or phone number, but I always say no.
i think its good because it keeps other people from using it if they steal it
I understand why they do it at kiosks and automated pay stations. But are you saying that as a cashier/clerk in your retail establishment, if someone refuses to provide you with their zipcode, you can't complete the transaction. That is what I am trying to figure out. I have never experienced that.
Our local Walmart requires zip code AND signature for any AMEX transaction. Its a PITA! Other Walmarts I've been to don't require it which is weird.
So I just use Discover instead there lol.
