FTC publishes its Annual Report on the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act

...
we are not sure which is more disturbing, the number of complaints and that they are increasing (more than 69,000 in 2006 up from 66,672 in 2005) or that FTC only filed one lawsuit in 2006 after receiving more than 69,000 complaints.
...

Last year, the Commission received 348,157 complaints directly from consumers about all industries, nearly identical to the 348,567 complaints received in 2005. These numbers do not include complaints about identity theft or violations of the Commission’s Do Not Call Registry. The number of FDCPA complaints we received increased to 69,204 in 2006, from 66,672 in 2005, a 3.8% increase.

The FTC only has a staff of 1,200. As such, there's only so much one agency can do. However, if 19.9 percent of all complains from consumers--not counting ID theft and Do Not Call violations--are FDCPA complaints, then Houston, there's a serious problem which is only gonna be addressed by decisive action outta Congress.

Why isn't someone in government calling for a War on Debt Collectors or a Debt Collections Czar? Perhaps FTC needs to get moved into DHS so they can more effectively safeguard the homeland from domestic terror groups like LVNV, NCO, Asset and Midland.

Fascinating post Noah. Thank you for sharing.

I hope this gets splashed all over the news media. The more consumers become aware of this, and credit in general, the better it will be for all.
