I wouldn't close anything until I got overall uti down to 10%.

i thought closed cards still remain part of your history  closing that wicked card should not change anything--it's such a small amount.

It does casino, but once it's closed, it won't help uti at all. Even paying off $2M, newtoit's uti is over 50%. So, taking that out of the mix won't help the scores at all.

So basically I need to make sure I get the util below 50% for a score increase?  Isn't 50% one of the "marks" for score increases?  I know with the $2k payment I will be right @ 50% but I need to make sure I get below that 50% util until I can pay it down even further.  Right now I am just interested in increasing my score.

Actually, there are several % Utilization levels that each one you get down to gives substantial point increases... so paying the $2000 will DEFINATLY help your score.

I think they were something like 79%(which over 80 % is maxed out), 49%,19%, 9% and then I think 1 smaller, but don't know... I've never been that low Smiley Very Happy

But that is also where the benefit of getting some of the cards paid of completely helps too... too many cards with balances like I mentioned before hurts your score too.

Newtoit. Any uti over 50% is hurting your score. Getting under 50% will be the first point when you will see some increases in score. Then as Carmeno stated, >20% and >10%. People have fooled around with 1-5%, but there is nothing published about that to my knowledge. I think that you are well on your way. By also making your normal monthly payments, you should go under 50% and should see some score increases. Try the sim to see what they project. Use the 1 month drop down option.

I'm suprised AMEX hasn't been knocking on your door with the balances you're carrying. After you finish paying your CC's to under 10% util you're in for a nice score increase.
