I have little knowledge of how the credit system works here in the US. For one, I have only a year's worth of history - and trying to build up as I plan to get a house...
But I do know about debt (and learned very HARD and DIFFICULT lessons along the way). If you cant afford downpayment of at least 20% (at least 30% is recommended) of what you are getting, then you are most probably not able to afford what you are getting...
