Almost in tears - 30 fake addresses, multiple fraudulent accounts

I went to apply for a car loan last week when I noticed my credit was in shambles. I do have positive credit (one auto loan, 1 CC, 4 Paid in Full Student Loans) but over the last 3 years, there has been multiple addresses reported on my bureaus (close to 30!!!!!!!!!) where I have never resided.  Additionally, there are about 12 collection accounts (Sprint, T-Mobile, Payday Loans) that aren't mine.

I went to get a police report.

I submitted to the police report to all (3) Bureaus. Transunion DENIED the police report, but won't tell me why. They opened a dispute instead.

Secondly, Experian also denied it - as they need a copy of the badge number of who took the report (Not just the ID?) which really doesn't make sense.

Equifax still received the police report (I faxed it)

So what is my best step with Transunion here? I read they often deny these 605b requests, but Im really quite sad someone went amuk with my credit.

As far as Experian - I can get a copy of the badge or an amended police report, or should I call back and say thats not needed? That would add 5+ days for detective to amend everything.

Equifax is just a waiting game.

Re: Almost in tears - 30 fake addresses, multiple fraudulent accounts

FCRA 605B(c) sets forth the conditions under which a CRA may decline to accept a request to block information, as follows:

FCRA 605B (c)        Authority to Decline or Rescind

"(1)       In general. A consumer reporting agency may decline to block, or may rescind any block, of information relating to a consumer under this section, if the consumer reporting agency reasonably determines that –

(A)        the information was blocked in error or a block was requested by the consumer in error;

(B)        the information was blocked, or a block was requested by the consumer, on the basis of a material misrepresentation of fact by the consumer relevant to the request to block; or

(C)        the consumer obtained possession of goods, services, or money as a result of the blocked transaction or transactions.

(2)      Notification to consumer. If a block of information is declined or rescinded under this subsection, the affected consumer shall be notified promptly, in the same manner as consumers are notified of the reinsertion of information under section 611(a)(5)(B). "

I would recommend filing a formal complaint with the CFPB, asserting that the CRA has declined to block without providing one of the authorized reasons set forth in FCRA 605B(c).

Re: Almost in tears - 30 fake addresses, multiple fraudulent accounts

Edit - Just filed those complaints (Experian and Transunion).

Secondly - I went back to the police station after making my initial post here (since I am very stressed over this). I was on the phone with Experian at the time to get more clarification on why denied the request. Experian, once againm said there was no badge number on the report. My local police department explained that they don't provide badge numbers on the report, only because multiple agencies can work on this case at any given time. Its not assigned to one concrete officer.

The police clerk spoke to them and informed Experian that the report was valid. They didn't budge.

It is important to note that the police officer whom took the report SIGNED the report + all ID Theft Affidavit pages. It just so happens - they want the badge number listed someplace. But there is no place for them to list it.

Also, the police department gave me several redacted reports (under FOIA) that also show no badge numbers were listed.

I didn't submit that to CFBP though, rather just a short explaination (plus relevant rule) on what happened.

How long does it take to hear back from the CFBP and has anyone had any success there?

Re: Almost in tears - 30 fake addresses, multiple fraudulent accounts

Update on experian...

I spoke to their compliance department. They called my local sheriff again. Come to find out, my local police department did some digging and some accounts were opened in another city (that city had plenty of variants of addresses on my report). They then forwarded their police report to that local department (where the theft took place).

That local police department (where theft took place) gave me a new police report with all accounts listed. YES - it has the persons badge number. WOO!

The only problem is they did not sign the report, but I don't think that should be a problem. The report clearly lists all the account information and was sent to me electronically today.

Once the new police dept recieved that request, my local police dept closed their file. Now, I can go their tomorrow to get a new report that is cross-linked to the other one, where someone can sign it. However, that won't be ready till Friday.

Experian wasn't able to verify because the report was "closed" out at that time. Now, its open under a different department (where I have report).

SO next step, get this report cross-linked (to have all documents) and resubmit it Friday. I don't want to chance it with just one report that isn't signed - given how they played Credit Cop today. I really want to submit just the single report but Im concerned Experian would ask for a signed one, and don't want to delay this. Do you think I should submit this one police report or wait for both?

Re: Almost in tears - 30 fake addresses, multiple fraudulent accounts

I feel your pain. My wife had major id theift we believe from my son's girl friend at the time.  Several out of state  addresses, a cell phone charge off almost right after opening, a tax lien in a state we never lived in and many more.  Many years and requests with fraud reports and police reports we got all but one off my wife's credit report.

It became a full time job. The one drops in a few months. It thank fully was on 1 report only. This was why for years we had to cash and carry.  She could not get any thing even bank accounts were a big deal.

This is so bizarre. My experience with Experian over removing fraudulent items was incredibly simple. I am so sorry you are having such a terrible experience.

Re: Almost in tears - 30 fake addresses, multiple fraudulent accounts

The good news....

Equifax removed most of the fraudulent stuff (rest will be done tomorrow).
It took me a LONG time to get in touch with a US agent, but they fixed all the addresses/inquiries/fraudulent accounts.

Ill follow up with Experian tomorrow, but I sent them the new police report yesterday. It has the badge number and can easily be validated, so hopefully they do so.

Then, just transunion - but my CFPB claim is still out there. And if I have too, ill abritrate .

Re: Almost in tears - 30 fake addresses, multiple fraudulent accounts

Very glad things are moving along, OP.

TransUnion was the slowest for me, but they actually removed the most in one swoop than the others. I had to go back a couple of times with Eq and Ex, even though they were both faster in removing stuff.

Keep us aprised.

Re: Almost in tears - 30 fake addresses, multiple fraudulent accounts

Equifax - completely clear! 13 collections - gone , Addresses - gone, Name Varients - gone, Employers - gone, Inquiries - gone!

Now I'll start to work on Experian.

I called Transunion and they , again, denied my blocking request. Really frustrating, but I do have a claim with CFPB.
