Closed accounts remain on your report for a period of years, and continue to factor into AAoA calculations.
As a separate matter, there are situations where an account is literally deleted, and disappears. One time I disputed a paid off installment loan that was reporting incorrectly. Instead of fixing the problem, the account was deleted.
