Can I dispute CR info in this case

[ Edited ]

I seem to remember reading that if you have an account on your credit report which indicates previous lates, you can possibly have the entire account deleted if there is no account number being reported. Is that correct, or am I getting something confused here? The case being made is that they have to prove the account in question in fact belongs to you, and if they cannot, they are obligate to remove that account from your credit report, taking any lates or baddies with it.

In my case, I have a few accounts, which are indicated as long since been closed, which are reporting lates from about 2003/04, however it just says "Account Number Not Reported". If it were you, what action would you take here? Would you dispute it as not your account due to no account number being shwn, or would you just let it go and hope the lates fall off in a year or two?

Appreciate any assistance.

Are they your accounts and were they actually late?
The slide from grace is really more like gliding
And I've found the trick is not to stop the sliding
But to find a graceful way of staying slid

I don't know. No account number, so I can't even verify it myself.

Are you looking at reports directly from the CRA or from a 3rd party supplier, like myFICO and TrueCredit?

On the accounts in question, who is reporting them? The OC or CA?

Re: Can I dispute CR info in this case

I went to my account on Myfico.com and pulled my Equifax report from there. Under my "Accounts" (section #4), this is where I'm finding some accounts that do not have the account numbers listed.

For your second question, I don't know how to determine who is reporting these accounts.

Stealth, isn't there a name in the creditor section?

Those are the OC(original creditors).

Did you have accounts with them?

You need your full reports from the CRA before disputing anything. There is a chance the account numbers will show up on those reports.

Also, I don't know that reporting of account numbers is required.

Particularly if you have had accounts with them. If you never did, then dispute w/o the free reports (you don't want to give them an extra 15 days to investigate).
