Closed Paid as agreed account with a negative remark

Does an account that was closed and paid for less than full amount (settled) affect FICO?  I had a Discover card years ago that i had to settle on due to being out of work at the time. It is showing as a positive/paid as agreed closed account on my report, but in the remarks it says "paid for less than full amount"

Should I just leave it be or should I dispute the remark (if that can even be done) it is on my EQ report.

Does it show lates on that account's history?  If so, it's a negative.  30D lates don't affect badly after 2 years, but 90D lates hurt you the entire 7+ years of reporting.

Account is not shown as a negative account. Status - paid as agreed. never delinquent. it is older than 7 years old but is still on report due to paid as agreed, no deliquent status. it just has the negative remark "paid for less than full". hope that makes sense.

You could still, if so inclined, pursue having the paid/settled for less special comment excluded.

It is an adverse item of information, in that it informs others that you did not fully pay a prior debt.

FCRA 605(a) sets an exclusion date for "any adverse item of information" in your credit report.

More specifically, subsections 605(a)(1-4) list specific adverse items that have their own specific exclusion provisions, and subsection  605(a)(5) is the catch-all exclusion provision that applies to "any other adverse item of information."  The special comment of paid for less is clearly an adverse item of information.

You can request the CRA to remove that special comment once 7 years has expired from the date of that event.

As an aside, exclusions made by the CRAs under the catch-all provision of subsection 605(a)(5) are in fact the most common basis for exclusion, as that is the provision that applies to monthly delinquencies.

The remarks can't hurt your scores but upon a manual review they certainly aren't a favorable look.
