Collection Question and Effect on fico

i have noticed that usually a collection will effect my fico score by approx 40 pts. i was wondering, as far as the scoring models are concerned......is a collection a collection? does the balance play a role in the severity of the score drop? for ex: a $1,000 collection vs. a $3,000 collection?

i need answers!

The balance really doesn't matter and the amount that it will effect your score will vary.  A high scorer can lose over 100 points for a collection.  The last time one hit me (which I was fortunate enough to have removed) only cost me 50.

history has a lot to do with it too, how old it is, or how new is it
