Was about to send a request for my three free credit reports via snail mail. I did see that there is an online option as well. Is there any advantages to either way other than the speed of getting them online?
The big-3 CRAs entered into a formal agreement with the FTC that specifies that those three CRAs can comply with the FCRA 612(a) requrirement for a free annual credit report by establishment of an online process, which has been implemented under the site "annualcreditreport.com."
The procedure permits the CRAs to require, if proper identification standards are met, that the consumer use that site.
However, the CRA can, if identity is an issue, require a written request.
The advantage to getting via snail mail is that you get a paper copy.
If you order online, you must make sure to burn your own copy of the report.
I would first attempt the online request, and then pursue a copy via mail if the CRA denies use of the site.
