Hollywood Video Charge Off - Advice Needed

Hello to everyone,

I have a $108 charge off from Hollywood Video in 2003. Someone I had lived with in college rented a video under my name and never returned it. I found out about it when collections called me; I called the Hollywood Video manager and explained; he agreed to call the collections people with me. I thought it was settled.

Now I find out that this is killing my credit score.

How can I get any trace of this charge-off removed? Also, what is the best approach (ie, writing letters to all 3 bureaus)

Thanks!!

Re: Hollywood Video Charge Off - Advice Needed

If you find an good answer on how to get this removed, PLEASE let me know. I have something on my credit reports from Hollywood Video. It is a movie I returned on the date it was due and never heard anything about it again. Now I have a chargeoff and the account has been bought by Credit Protection Specialists. I can't find a phone number or address to contact them. Hollywood Video says it is out of their hands, and CPS verifies if I send a dispute to the credit bureaus. Pretty helpless feeling.

Re: Hollywood Video Charge Off - Advice Needed

The charge was from 2003, so I have not talked to Hollywood Video about it in 4 years. My problem is that I am not sure where to start... I sent letters (from the MyFico online kit) to all three reporting agencies. But I have no real evidence that I did not make the rental so I am not sure how well it will be received. Should I just pay the $108 dollars to get rid of it? I am worried that if I do, it will only lend credence to the charge-off and make it a permanent factor.

I don't understand--I have been late for blockbuster, hollywood, maybe even been in collections, but they have never showed up on any credit report--do some states do this and some don't? I am in pennsylvania, and I have never had any collection reported from any utility company or video rental store
