Hey guys
Recently I had a collections account appear on my credit report- apparently the gas provider (national grid- long island) for an apartment I use to rent never closed my account and continued to bill me for gas for over 2 years after the end of my lease. Now they claim I owe them about $1000.
I figured the first step in all this is to approach national grid and dispute the charges. Its crazy since I have a receipt when I payed the account off in full when I was moving out. I explicitly remember requesting they close my account as I was leaving, and they told me they would. I have no paperwork proving this, however. Based on my reasearch about National grid, I believe they will claim I am still liable. (Seriously though, why would they wait over 2 years to stop charging my account with no payments???)
The collection agency appears on my report as "transworld". Based on my research about these guys, I hear they will refuse a "pay for delete" request.
All i want is this bogus collection off my credit score so it can recover. Even if I have to pay it, i will. But will it even improve my credit if they dont agree to PFD?
Thanks
Well, you want to get that off the CRAs regardless. If those charges are for sure not yours and you closed the account/paid off in full, i would dispute. There's no way i would pay them $1,000 to PFD IF it was a mistake on their behalf just so your credit looks good.
If not yours, fight it.
