I'm so freaking new, bear with my question...

Well if I have a bunch of charge offs from 2001 and around then, the accounts have all been sold to collections. I have 5 new trade lines open, 6 months to 3 years old. I am never late with any of them. I also have an auto loan in good standing. As long as I make my payments on time, can the old items hurt me still? I am concerned if an old debt where sold or transfered to another collection agency, will it have a negative impact on my credit report? I really want to improve my credit, but I'm not sure how to go about it. Should I try and dispute the collections? Settle them if they will agree to remove the negative postings from my credit report? I'm sorry for being clueless, I lost all hope years ago when all this started happening.

if they are from 2001 - they should fall off this year-

If you are not going to make any major purchases this year- you could go a settle them- this may or may not help your score.
