Thanks guys! I did file a police report. Luckily, it was easy because the police were actually the ones who notified me about the accountant. Turns out, he had a gambling problem that got away from him so he decided to steal from clients and the IRS. Seems crazy to me!
I have sent the report, a letter and the tax refund to HSBC. I'll let you know what they do! I am hopeful because I already spoke with their loss prevention department who advised me on what steps to take. I don't know for certain, but based on my discussion with them, it sounded like they were somehow already aware of issues with my preparer.
