Inquiry = ID Theft?

If you had a recent hard inquiry for a utility on your report that is in no way related to you, would that be considered identity theft?  Especially if it occurs several states away?  I am trying to figure out what to do.  I read the thread on identity theft.  I am not seeing any new accounts or anything.  Is it too early to do a police report?  I don't want to be an alarmist and look stupid, but it is really concerning.

Re: Inquiry = ID Theft?

The short answer is, it could be.

Filing a police report could be a bit premature. If I were you, the first thing I would do is contact the utility company and see why they issued the pull (and to get them to remove it). If you find out someone is trying to open service as you, then you need to take quick steps to protect yourself (like locking your reports, etc.).

Re: Inquiry = ID Theft?

I spent nearly 2.5 hours on the phone with Comcast, and they could not find anything. They opened an investigation. They told be to fill out an FTC form. I disputed the inquiry with EQ. I am going to keep a close eye on things. I have monitoring on all 3 bureaus, so that will help. Thanks for your advice.
