This is a common tactic and it can work, but I would no try this with Amex.

FICO 08 Scores (08-22-2014): EQ 820, EX 817, TU 815
All three scores were 850. Lost points for not having an open installment TL. So, BE WARNED!!!!!

I didn't want to do a hard pull for my CLI ...I can live with the card at 0 bal. just sock it away.
