Paying in full versus settled for less than amount owed

I paid some credit cards off two years ago for less than the full amount. Although I know that the companies just knocked off some of the penalties and interest, it of course shows derogetory on my reports and knocks my score way down.
I am just wondering point wise, if anyone knows if there is any difference for paying in full.
Does it still report as derogetory if you are way behind, but pay in full?
