My daughter has been selected with a group of other students to travel to Paris this summer, the cost for everything is 5K, I've been paying on it and now the balance is down to 3K. I was thinking of taking out a personal loan from my CU for 2K (I already have the other 1K to put with it and pay off the whole balance). My question is, will taking out a personal loan affect my score in a bad way? Here's my current credit profile
Auto loan 34K / 21K balance
CapOne $500CL / $0 balance
Hsbc $320CL / $0 balance
Macys $500CL / $74 balance
Kay Jewelers $800CL / $0 balance
Zales $750CL / $83 balance
1 pd collection account 6 1/2 years old set to fall off 10/2010 - only showing on my EQ and TU cr's, EX report has no baddies or negative accounts showing.
Before deciding to apply for this loan, I wanted to get some advice.
The short answer is that it will lower your score, but not dramatically. This really isn't a credit issue, this is a financial issue. If you can afford to pay the remaining balance without the loan, then there is no need to take one out. If you can't, then the loan might be your only option. Regardless, never make financial decisions based on FICO.
Thanks JoeB...Yeah the only reason I would take out the loan would be if I wasn't going to have the money to pay off the balance, the balance is due in June. That was just one option I was looking at, I might not even need to take out the loan, but if I did I just wanted to get an idea of the impact it would've had on my credit. I've been really trying to keep my credit intact since I've gotten it back on the right track, starting to THINK before I DO if you know what I mean
I took out an unsecured loan last month for $2600. My Equifax score only dropped 2 points.
That's not bad...Again hopefully I won't end up having to take out a loan, but if I do it's good to know the impact would be minimal. Thanks for the replies
